Why Make This Recipe

If you want to live a frugal life, this is one of the best ways to do that. It saves space because you are storing one container of dry mix instead of 10 cans. It saves money because you can make this dry mix from pantry ingredients that you probably already have on hand. Instead of buying pantry ingredients and pre-made cans at the store you can skip that cans from the grocery store all together by making this mix at home.

If you aren’t sure whether buying pre-made mixes from the grocery store or making everything from scratch is cheaper, I have broken it down for you in this blog post –> Cost Comparison.

The Recipe

I highly suggest making the recipe in bulk because depending on how much you use cream of soups you may use this recipe A LOT! This is the first fry mix I run out of and am constantly making more of because of how universal it is. You can make cream of broccoli, cream of mushroom, and cream of chicken with this base recipe.

Here is the recipe to make this dry mix in bulk –> Cream of Soup Base.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Add water and cream of soup base to a small saucepan.
  2. Whisk until there are no clumps left.
  3. Bring it to a slow boil until it thickens.
  4. Then add cooked (drained) broccoli and combine.

How To Use this Recipe

You can use this recipe for anything that calls for cream of broccoli soup. This recipe is equivalent to one small can from the grocery store so if you need more than one can, double the recipe as many times as you need.

This recipe is also intended to have low sodium so if you prefer to add salt you definitely can!

I really like using this recipe in soup recipes or casseroles. This recipe is so universal, don’t be afraid to experiment with using it in different recipes and experimenting with it!

Storing Tips

You will want to store this dry mix in an airtight container. By storing it in an airtight container, you are preventing it from going stale. If you store this mixture properly, it will last months! However, this mixture usually gets used up long before it has ever gone stale, at least for me.

This is the set up I use for easy of storing, using and refilling. The airtight container I use.

You can also store the broccoli in a couple different ways. You can use fresh broccoli that’s stored in the fridge, you can use frozen broccoli that’s stored in the freezer, or you can freeze dry them and store them in the pantry. No matter how you store them, you will want to keep as much air off of them as possible. Putting fresh broccoli in water is a great way to get the air off of it so it stays fresh longer. Vacuum sealing the air out of your frozen broccoli is a great way to accomplish this. You can also Vacuum seal freeze dried broccoli in large mason jars.
